Monday 9 July 2007

Hello everyone. Right straight to my next artistic endeavour.

I have been working with a very exciting up and coming singer, songwriter and entertainer called Delencia.By the way make sure to check out her profile at

www.myspace.com/delenciaofficial.

We had a photo shoot recently, and the results have been quite exciting. Most of the photos have been influenced by "Film-Noir" imagery of the 1940's - late 1950's, which is associated with a low-key black and white visual style that had its roots in German Expressionism. The photos also refer to one of the great Italian painters Carravaggio for his use of strong contrasts of light, and dark shadows to help convey a sense of drama and mystery, which i feel perfectly suits Delencia's personality and her new type of music, which is going to be introduced under the banner of "Afrourban". Afrourban in short is, urban music mixed with traditional and contemporary African music and "tribal" soundsto create an experimental sound which is eclectic, unexpected and exciting.

Alright then, off to the next project. Watch this space!!!

THE "RENOIR" PROJECT IS COMPLETED! OLD HABITS REALLY DO DIE HARD!!!

Monday 18 June 2007

Everything about this project/commission at first felt strange, why?, you may ask, simple! because i had not painted in this style for roughly about four years. But this opportunity was not to be missed as it was going to provide me with some creative freedom.

The whole project was thought of by the composer Jimmi James and the restaurant owner/collector Kazim Kildirim. Renoir's work was the subject and together we moulded the whole concept of what was to go on the Renoir restaurant walls. Once the basic ideas of the works had been sorted out, we all livened up with great excitement and anticipation. I personally, been a bit naughty, could not wait to twist these original Renoir paintings into my own unique/humourous concept(although it was hard to stop myself going too far with my comic touches, believe me!).

The first painting "Private", got me on a slow start, although it was completed in three days. The others followed, they too were completed within two to three days. So i carried on........... till the five smaller pieces were completed.

Then came the turn of the BIGGEST piece, which was to be the last piece. Measuring at a whopping 255.5cm by 154cm. It seemed a bit daunting at first, if i'm to be honest. But as usual, i attacked it with such determination and ferocity, that i managed to complete roughly half of it in about a week.

Kazim and Jimmi came over, had a look at the progress of this huge piece, and were so far impressed with the whole thing, and frankly so was i. But there was something missing in it for me. As i stood back later that day, whilst painting, i had a ureka moment, and thought to myself yep! that's it! that's it!. The idea i had was to add in there a "self-portrait" meeting and shaking the hands of Renoir the artist who's work i was making pastiche's of. I then decide to throw in an ipod in there, so it would seem as if i was listening to music. Ofcause with the whole thing being set in the 18th century, it was a pretty odd thing to do, but it worked! Hurray!!!!!
Other additions in this final piece include a winking dog which has really littened the faces of the restaurants regular customers, who have been very very impressed with all the works.

We had an opening night to intruduce the works to the public, it all went pretty well, and some great photos were taken aswel. Check out the slide show below, and i hope you enjoy it all.

Lots of LOVE Eugene

CAN YOU IMAGINE.......

Imagine this, first you get a call from an organisation you have worked with previously, they ask a few questions about a structure called the "cube" situated in the northwest of london, kilburn to be precise. The cube has been designed for local people to freely post their comments, drawings, writtings and so forth. It could be described as an outdoor gallery if you like. I answered all their enquiries to their satisfaction of cause, and we leave it there.

About two months go past and i do not here anything from them, then suddenly i am literally hit by this big seven foot or so poster of myself one afternoon as i pass by a group of houses in kilburn(north west london) to deliver a painting to a client. You can imagine the shock and suprise, although it was a pleasant one. I turned to this client of mine and asked jokingly "do you recognise that guy on the poster?", he replied joking "yes, it's your look alike isn't it?, I have seen it already". I then started to wonder when it had been put up, and how many people had seen it before me. The rest is history as they say.................The next time you see my face on a wall near you, call me.. ha ha ha ha.....Until next time, i'm out!

Click the images to enlarge NOW!

Who is this guy standing near the poster?, he looks a bit familiar, don't you think?.

My name is spelled wonderfully wrong on the poster. Oh well. Perhaps i should take up this new surname. What do you think?

CHECK OUT "PRESENCE",THE PHOTOS NOW!

Hello Guys and Girls, and all those in between!, I'm sure none of us missed the sudden snow fall a few days back. Wasn't it just beautiful?, with all the white of the snow, and the slippery pavements and the cold?, wasn't it just.. just...jusssssst glorious?. I know you're probably thinking, No it wasn't!, you probably like me, nearly slipped or fell. To be honest the paths i walked that day were so slippery, i ended up walking so carefully and so slow, I'm sure a snail would have beaten me to a race that day.
I'm sure you will agree, putting all the negatives on the side, it was a beautiful day, a day full of unpredictable situations and lots of snow fights!. I just had to take some photos that day, as usual the unusual weather inspired me, particularly the many footprints, hand prints and so forth. hence the title "Presence". I have here chosen only six photographs out of many, to share with you. I hope they give you the chill. Click to enlarge the photos!.
