That basically summed up many peoples reaction to these NEW photos so far!

IT'S DONE AND DUSTED!!!
THE "RENOIR" PROJECT IS COMPLETED! OLD HABITS REALLY DO DIE HARD!!!

Monday 18 June 2007

Everything about this project/commission at first felt strange, why?, you may ask, simple! because i had not painted in this style for roughly about four years. But this opportunity was not to be missed as it was going to provide me with some creative freedom.

The whole project was thought of by the composer Jimmi James and the restaurant owner/collector Kazim Kildirim. Renoir's work was the subject and together we moulded the whole concept of what was to go on the Renoir restaurant walls. Once the basic ideas of the works had been sorted out, we all livened up with great excitement and anticipation. I personally, been a bit naughty, could not wait to twist these original Renoir paintings into my own unique/humourous concept(although it was hard to stop myself going too far with my comic touches, believe me!).

The first painting "Private", got me on a slow start, although it was completed in three days. The others followed, they too were completed within two to three days. So i carried on........... till the five smaller pieces were completed.

Then came the turn of the BIGGEST piece, which was to be the last piece. Measuring at a whopping 255.5cm by 154cm. It seemed a bit daunting at first, if i'm to be honest. But as usual, i attacked it with such determination and ferocity, that i managed to complete roughly half of it in about a week.

Kazim and Jimmi came over, had a look at the progress of this huge piece, and were so far impressed with the whole thing, and frankly so was i. But there was something missing in it for me. As i stood back later that day, whilst painting, i had a ureka moment, and thought to myself yep! that's it! that's it!. The idea i had was to add in there a "self-portrait" meeting and shaking the hands of Renoir the artist who's work i was making pastiche's of. I then decide to throw in an ipod in there, so it would seem as if i was listening to music. Ofcause with the whole thing being set in the 18th century, it was a pretty odd thing to do, but it worked! Hurray!!!!!
Other additions in this final piece include a winking dog which has really littened the faces of the restaurants regular customers, who have been very very impressed with all the works.

We had an opening night to intruduce the works to the public, it all went pretty well, and some great photos were taken aswel. Check out the slide show below, and i hope you enjoy it all.

Lots of LOVE Eugene
